Create your own seed bombs with just 3 simple ingredients.
Get kids involved and grow their interest in nature.
Ingredients
-
Clay Powder 350g / 12 oz.
You can substitute this with good quality garden clay
-
Sifted Peat-Free Compost 250g / 9 oz
This gives the seeds bombs good structure and adds essential nutrients to get the seedlings off to a great start
-
Mix of native perrenial and annual wildflower seeds 5g
Each seed bomb contains between 10 and 30 seeds.
-
Water 90ml / 3 fl. oz.
I have tried many different ingredients to make seed bombs, but I have settled on the one listed above. These ingredients are non-toxic, sourced in Ireland and they create a seed bomb that is firm, light, and doesn’t break-up too quickly when tossed onto open soil.
Method
Mix the clay powder and peat-free compost together in a bowl. Add the water and mix well to form a large dough-like ball. If the mixture is too crumbly, add a little more water. If it is too wet and sticky, add some more clay/compost mixture.
Form the mixture into approx. 110-120 balls (try to get each one the approximate size of a Malteser, 10mm in diameter).
Spread the seeds out on a flat surface, such as a plate. Placing a ball in the palm of your hand, press your index finger into it to create a large dimple. Dip your moist fingertip into the seed mixture and press the seeds into the dimple. Roll the clay to reshape it into a ball, encasing the seeds inside. Place the seed ball onto a clean surface and repeat the procedure until all the mixture is used up.
Place the seed balls in a warm, airy place to dry. Outside on a warm, sunny day is perfect. This should take between 1 and 3 days, depending on conditions. When the seedballs are hard and fully dried out they should be stored in a cool, dry place such as a shed or garage. Don’t store in plastic or glass containers as they need to be able to breathe. A cardboard or wooden box is ideal.
